Mubarak quits on 18th day of protests
CAIRO: Beleaguered president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak finally yielded to the relentless public protests and stepped down as the head of state on Friday, Geo News reported.
Jubilations erupted at Tehrir Square, the epicenter of the protests that had been going on in Egypt, demanding ouster of Hosni Mubarak who had been ruling the country for the past 29 years.
Hosni Mubarak stepped down and handed power to the military, Vice President Omar Suleiman said in a brief televised statement.
"Taking into consideration the difficult circumstances the country is going through, President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave the post of president of the republic and has tasked the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to manage the state's affairs," Suleiman said.
